City Council plans to citizens for a new City Hall in 2013:
Mayor Gary Bullard. “I don’t think citizens and taxpayers of Manzanita want to build a facility through an additional tax. It will have to be financed through the sale of property”.
Then Councilor Mike Scott had no problem remodeling a now 51 year old building that was never designed to function as a City Hall. “I say remodel the old Fire Station, the heck with a second story and keep the parking lot across the street”.
The Manzanita Listens outreach found that COST was the top priority in building a new City Hall.
The City still owes approximately 1 million dollars to pay off the loan to purchase the Underhill property and are now contemplating which combination of more loans, new fees or raising your property taxes through another Bond measure you should pay.
Total estimated cost to repair and remodel of 5,500 square foot Underhill School: $2,070,000
New construction of a 5,500 square foot building including demolition of School :
At $500 per square foot: $2,950,000 At $600 per square foot: $3,500,000.
A remodel will be built to the same building code, energy efficiency and seismic requirements as a new build. There is nothing in a new build structure that can’t be designed in a remodel.
Reason given for purchase of the Underhill property: “The council wants to move quickly on this, and rightfully so, but we do need to purchase a new building soon. The next step after that is to hire an architect to assist in structural redesigning, shoring up and help modernize the building.” Jerry Taylor, City Manager 2017. That “modernized building” could look like this.
NO BOND OR ADDITIONAL TAXES OR FEES NEEDED
